— Helping You Plan for Care —
Understanding Your Health Care Costs
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” that outlines how much your medical care is expected to cost. Under the law, health care providers must offer an estimate for patients who don’t have insurance or choose not to use it, helping you understand the expected costs of medical services and items in advance.
You Have The Right
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of non-emergency services, including medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Get an Estimate
Request a written Good Faith Estimate from your health care provider at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask any provider for a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling.
You Can Dispute
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Save a Copy
Save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
